This maxi-single (or mini-album) is an interesting addition to the expanding catalogue of S&M. The feature song has beautiful and catchy melody, with Martina's voice turning it into a hymn to happiness. Closer to the end the mood changes to prepare you for the second part, that is Not Christmas, three times longer than the what-might-look-as-the-main-part of the work.
Can't choose the best track here, for there are only two of them and they are interconnected with each other.
After having worked on two albums in a year, we thought about closing this productive phase with a little experiment. A Christmas EP made up by two songs (it would have been a single with two sides in its original idea) conceived to be in total contrast with each other: the first one, named "This Is Christmas", is purely Christmassy and it seems to be coming right out of the 60's; while the second one, named "This Is Not Christmas", is an experimental 15 minutes long track (that's why this is an EP and not a single in the end).
Early stages of this project began in August (quite weird to be writing about Christmas while sweating profusely), and the first song, This Is Christmas, came out very quickly, consciously using many cliches from this kind of songs in terms of chord sequences, melodies and sounds. The lyrics are about an imaginary Christmas in a dystopian future (everyone has to write something about a dystopian future at least once, isn't it?), where Christmas is the only day in which people are allowed to be or look happy. And they have to, even if they aren't, that's the paradox. The second song, This Is Not Christmas, is a totally different beast. As said above, the main reason to do 2 songs was contrast. So basically here you have 15 minutes of bits and pieces all born from improvisations with overdubs, no acual composition (apart maybe for the last section). Here we talk about being happy when it's not Christmas, so in a moment when you can't show it. So happiness leads to frustration. At he end of the song we find ourselves again at Christmas day, "this is not Christmas you whisper to no one, but that's what it is and I guess now it's show time again".
As usual, this EP has been recorded and produced by ourselves at home, with very little equipment. Mainly because we can't afford anything better for now, but that doesn't mean that we can't record our music! So if you want our music to sound better in the future, please support us.
